about

MY LOCKDOWN PROJECT! During a long, protracted time in a pandemic-induced lockdown in Melbourne through 2020 and 2021, I had plenty of time on my hands to consider putting some of my musical noodlings to tape and shape a recording of my own. It had been over 35 years since I’d released my own material, and back then it was part of a band – never out on my own. So, when it came time to think about making my solo first album, the question was – what do I do? There are so many roads to take.

The first step was to get myself together – no easy task. I’d spent the past 3 decades managing my own successful recording label, producing, recording and releasing an impressive roster of award-winning local Blues and Folk artists. Understandably, I was a tad reticent stepping out of a producer role to the other side of the microphone. Many years of not playing an instrument professionally had taken their toll too. It wasn’t just the guitar strings that were rusty!

Secondly – what material? Eventually, I decided to go back to the start. The first Blues tunes that I learnt on the guitar in my youth seemed an obvious choice. One slight problem is that you cannot undo awareness, and my awareness of skilful playing had grown appreciably since I was a teenager, and especially after being so closely associated with some of Australia’s top musicians. I felt totally exposed! Many hours of back to basics ensured – and I engaged some key skilled musicians to help along the way.

Thirdly – what format? My initial thought was to do a totally solo guitar/voice album, in the style of the old Country Blues, but some rudimentary recordings very quickly convinced me that it wasn’t going to impress (me for a start). Whilst wrestling with this conundrum, I was reading WC Handy’s autobiography – “Father Of The Blues”. In the book, he describes one of the first times he experienced a “Blues combo”. They were “showered with money”, he states. The winning combo therein described, was guitar/violin and mandolin. OK – that was it for me – if we are going back to the start, let’s go way back!

This album is a mix of my original material and my interpretations of some old favourites. The whole album was pulled together from a distance in lockdown, so extra big thanks and gratitude to those who helped me bring this to fruition, totally remotely, and especially to Anne Harris USA for her enthusiasm and input above and beyond the call of duty.

At the time of the release of this work, I’ve already started recording a follow-up album. This is a great indicator of the personal growth, enrichment and value I have gained in the process. Primarily this album is for me, and I hope it is enjoyed by some of you too.
